PRETORIA: The National Department of Transport says it is investigating allegations of financial irregularities made against the department by Whistleblower Esethu Hasane.
The allegations were published in Sunday World on 30 August 2026 in an article headlined “Whistleblower Alleges R15m Worth of Dubious Payments at DOT.”
According to the National Department of Transport, the Acting Director-General, Mathabatha Mokonyama, has ordered an independent investigation by law firm Bowmans. The department says the investigation is already underway.
The department has called on the public and Hasane to allow the investigation to take its course. It says remedial action will be taken if the investigation finds breaches of the regulatory environment.
The department has also rejected Hasane’s allegations of victimisation, saying claims that he was harassed for blowing the whistle on financial irregularities are untrue.
It says the allegations of harassment were dismissed with costs by the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court following Hasane’sapplication for a protection order. Similar allegations were also dismissed with costs by the Public Service Co-ordinating Bargaining Council.
The department further says that Hasane’s requests for the Public Protector and the Public Service Commission to investigate the alleged harassment were unsuccessful.
