The trial of a businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, and his co-accused is expected to take a new turn when a police officer takes the witness stand today.

The officer, who was shot while on duty and recently underwent surgery, is expected to testify as the State pushes ahead with its case in the Johannesburg High Court.

The State had been forced to postpone proceedings last week after the officer was declared unavailable to testify.

Prosecutor Elize Le Roux told the court that the witness was expected to recover sufficiently to appear in court on Monday.

Matlala and the four co-accused are facing serious charges, including attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering.

The case centres on allegations involving socialite TebogoThobejane, businessman Joe Sibanyoni, and a music producer Seunkie Mokubung.

The proceedings are currently focused on a trial-within-a-trial, where the court is considering the admissibility of evidence that the State intends to rely on.

With the police officer expected back in court, the State is hoping to make further progress this week and conclude the trial-within-a-trial.
