The State has withdrawn the main perjury charge against former Public Protector Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane.

The charge was withdrawn in the Pretoria Regional Court, changing the course of the criminal case stemming from her 2017 investigation into the Absa/Bankorp matter.

Mkhwebane had been facing five charges, including the main perjury count. With the primary charge now withdrawn, the remaining four charges are also expected to fall away.

The matter has been postponed to 30 September 2026, when Mkhwebane’s legal team is expected to argue that she should be discharged.
