Bafana Mahungela, accused of murdering Johannesburg teacher Kirsten Kluyts, has been found guilty.

Sentencing proceedings have been set for 27 October 2026.

Mahungela, a former Varsity College student, was arrested in November 2023 after CCTV footage allegedly showed him leaving the scene of the crime wearing Kluyts’ T-shirt.

The 23-year-old was found guilty on all counts, including murder, kidnapping and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Kluyts’ body was discovered on a jogging path in a park in Sandton in October 2023.

A post-mortem examination found that she died from blunt force trauma to the head and strangulation.

Kluyts was 34 years old and 14 weeks pregnant at the time of her murder.

Mahungela had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

He is now expected to return to the High Court in Johannesburg on 27 October, when sentencing proceedings will begin.

The court will consider the circumstances of the crimes and other factors before determining the appropriate sentence.
