University of Limpopo SRC president Nare Magwai is calling for tighter campus security following the killing of security guard Christina Nyalungu on campus.
Magwai says the newly constituted SRC has raised concerns with Campus Control over how people and vehicles enter the university, particularly after hours. The 44-year-old suspect, Thomas Samuel Mahlo, appeared in court in connection with Nyalungu’s death. The case has been postponed to 13 November 2026.
Mahlo has indicated that he does not want to apply for bail and remains in custody. Magwai says the SRC was only constituted last week and had not yet been formally inducted when the incident happened.
He says the council visited Campus Control and submitted a memorandum of demands calling for stricter screening of people entering the university. “Our mandate is very clear. We want to ensure that the student population at large is safe,” Magwai said.
He questioned how students can be expected to feel safe when a security guard whose duty was to protect them was killed on campus. Magwai also raised concerns about the university’s rule that vehicles are not allowed to enter the campus after 6pm.The incident happened at around 8pm.
He says the SRC wants the university to strictly enforce the rule and ensure that people and vehicles entering the campus after hours are properly assessed. Magwai says the SRC will also monitor Mahlo’s court case and attend future proceedings.
He says the council will continue engaging Campus Control to ensure that the safety concerns raised after the incident are addressed.
