Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) will hold its 15th National Congress in Midrand, Johannesburg, starting this Monday.
The amid is growing concerns over the rising cost of living, high inflation, and persistent unemployment.About 1,800 delegates from 16 COSATU-affiliated unions are expected to attend the congress and vote for the labour federation’s leadership.
COSATU national spokesperson, Zanele Sabela says the congress will assess the state of the federation and discuss the challenges facing workers amid a stagnant economy. She says the South African economy has grown by only about 1% for more than a decade, while unemployment rate remains at 43.8%.
Sabela says workers are also facing challenges brought about by the changing world of work, particularly gig and platform workers who, she says, are experiencing exploitative working conditions.
