Students at Sefako Makgatho University (SMU) have raised serious concerns about poor hygiene conditions in their residences, saying the situation is negatively affecting both their health and academic performance.
Once regarded as a beacon of medical excellence, the university is now facing criticism over deteriorating living conditions, particularly in student accommodation.
Residents of the 4B female residence report that they have gone for two weeks without cleaning staff or running water, sparking outrage among students, especially considering the annual accommodation fee of approximately R50,000.
“As South Africa’s only health sciences university, we should be setting an example for hygiene and public health. The current situation is deeply unsettling,” said one student.
Students have also expressed fears of being exposed to infections due to the lack of water and poor sanitation, with some claiming that these conditions have already begun to disrupt their academic schedules, including delays in tests.
The growing concerns have prompted calls for urgent intervention to restore basic living standards and ensure a safe environment conducive to learning.
