The family of Joshua Petersen, a schoolboy left paralysed after a stabbing at Westridge High School in Durban, is heartbroken after the attacker was sentenced to five years in prison.
The offender who is a minor, will serve the sentence at a youth correctional centre.
The case was held privately because of the accused’s age.Joshua’s parents said they are deeply upset and believe the punishment is too light for the harm caused.
His grandmother also expressed anger, saying the sentence does not match the seriousness of the crime. Joshua, who now struggles with mobility, attended the court hoping for closure.
However, the outcome left him shocked and speechless. His mother said he had panic attacks the night before the sentencing.
The family says the court process has added more pain to an already difficult journey, as they continue to support Joshua through recovery.
