Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters has issued a strong statement following the independent commission’s decision in the long-running Manchester City financial case.

The independent commission found Manchester City guilty of serious breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules covering the nine-season period from 2009/10 to 2017/18.

It also found the club guilty of the majority of charges relating to its cooperation with the league’s investigation.

Masters said the decision establishes the facts of what happened during the period and described the disciplinary case and decision as the most significant in Premier League history.

He also stressed that the league’s responsibility is to uphold rules approved by the clubs and protect the integrity and competitiveness of the competition.

However, the case is not yet completely finished. The commission’s findings have been delivered, but the sanction that could follow remains to be determined.

Manchester City has also stated that it is disappointed with the verdict and intends to pursue an appeal, arguing that the decision contains errors of law, principle and fact.

The next stage will therefore focus on the appeal process and the eventual sanction, meaning the story surrounding Manchester City and the Premier League is still ongoing.
