EFF leader Julius Malema has been granted leave to appeal his firearm conviction by the High Court in Makhanda, Eastern Cape.
The case originates from an incident in July 2018 when Malema discharged a firearm during the EFF’s fifth anniversary celebrations at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane.
He was found guilty in October 2025 on charges related to unlawful firearm possession, ammunition possession, and discharging a firearm in a public place. Earlier this year, Malema was sentenced to five years in prison.
Although a magistrate denied his application to appeal the conviction, the High Court has now granted him leave to challenge the ruling.
The appeal process will determine whether the conviction and sentence should stand.
