Suspended University of Fort Hare Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sakhela Buhlungu, has resigned with immediate effect after leading the institution since 2017.
While Buhlungu confirmed his resignation, the university council has stated that it does not accept the decision.
Council chairperson Dr Siyanda Makaula argued that the resignation prevents Buhlungu from responding to serious allegations against him and rejected claims that the disciplinary process was unfair or predetermined.
In response, Buhlungu maintained that his resignation remains valid and disputed the university’s request for a three-month notice period, saying it is not required by the institution’s employment policy.
The dispute between Buhlungu and the university council continues, with further developments expected.
