A 32-year-old man has been arrested in Moletlane, Limpopo, for allegedly possessing illicit cigarettes, attempting to bribe police officers and contravening immigration laws.
The Capricorn District Flying Squad arrested the suspect on Saturday, 12 September, while conducting an investigation in the Zebediela area.
Police say they received information about a shop owner who was allegedly involved in selling drugs and illicit cigarettes. The information was followed up, leading officers to premises in the Moletlane policing area.
Police searched the premises after obtaining permission and allegedly found a plastic bag containing 19 cartons of Remington Gold cigarettes suspected to be illicit.
The suspect allegedly attempted to bribe the officers with R1,000, but they rejected the offer and continued with the investigation.
Police also say the suspect failed to produce documents confirming his legal status in South Africa.
He was arrested and detained at Moletlane Police Station and is expected to appear before the relevant Magistrate’s Court.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers commended the officers for refusing the alleged bribe, saying attempts to corrupt police members will not be tolerated.
