The South African government says it has facilitated the return of more than 250 Zimbabwean and Nigerian nationals who had gathered at the Zimbabwean Consulate in Johannesburg.
A total of 194 Zimbabwean nationals, including 101 minors, were processed and departed for Zimbabwe on Friday.
Separately, 56 Nigerian nationals, including 21 minors, were also processed with the assistance of the Nigerian Embassy.
The government says the process forms part of efforts to ensure that the return of foreign nationals is conducted in an orderly and lawful manner.
Deputy government spokesperson William Baloyi says authorities are working with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the process is carried out safely and humanely.
“Government continues to work with the relevant authorities and stakeholders to facilitate an orderly repatriation and deportation; safe and humane process in accordance with applicable laws and established procedures,” Baloyi said.
The government has not provided further details on the circumstances that led to the foreign nationals gathering at the Zimbabwean Consulate.
Authorities say the repatriation and deportation process will continue to be handled in accordance with South African laws and established procedures.
The departure of the Zimbabwean and Nigerian nationals comes amid ongoing government efforts to manage the status and movement of foreign nationals in the country.
Officials say relevant authorities and diplomatic missions will continue working together to facilitate the process and ensure that those affected are treated in accordance with the law.
