The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has criticised Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina following a heated exchange with a member of the Kouga community.

The incident occurred during the launch of an upgraded pump station, where a community member who was being escorted from the venue directed profane remarks at the minister. Majodina responded with similar language.

The exchange, which was captured on video, has since sparked criticism from opposition parties and members of the public.

The EFF described the minister’s conduct as inappropriate, saying public representatives are expected to treat members of the public with dignity and respect, even during difficult engagements.

The party said South Africans are increasingly frustrated by slow service delivery, corruption and a perceived lack of government intervention in some communities.

It argued that responding to public frustration with anger and profanity does not demonstrate the leadership expected from a government official.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) and ActionSA have also reportedly lodged ethics complaints over the incident.

Meanwhile, calls have been made for President Cyril Ramaphosa to address the matter. A political analyst has suggested that a public apology and possible disciplinary action may be necessary to uphold the standards expected of public officials.

Majodina’s outburst has placed renewed focus on how government leaders engage with communities, particularly during public meetings where residents raise concerns about service delivery.
