A 48 year old man is expected to appear in the Giyani Magistrate’s Court today (25 September 2026), after being arrested for the alleged murder of his 82 year old mother in Xikukwani village.
Police responded to a murder complaint during the early hours of Wednesday, 23 September 2026. On arrival, they found the elderly woman lying on a bed with injuries to her head and face.
She was declared dead at the scene by paramedics. According to police, the woman lived with her son, who initially reported the incident.
He allegedly told officers that he had returned home after a night of drinking and found his mother injured. Investigations continued, police linked the son to the woman’s death and arrested him.
He is facing a charge of murder. Police are also investigating whether the elderly woman was sexually assaulted before her death.
A rape charge could be added if investigators find enough evidence. The suspect is due to appear before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court today.
Police have condemned the incident and urged communities to protect elderly and vulnerable people.
