According to Correctional Services National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale, the prisoner who escaped from the Rooigrond Maximum Correctional Centre near Mahikeng, in North West has been rearrested.
Edward Madiba was serving a 20-year sentence for robbery, possession of a firearm and ammunition, kidnapping and parole violations when he escaped from the correctional facility.
Thobakgale confirmed that investigations are continuing to determine whether anyone assisted Madiba during the escape. Preliminary findings suggest the inmate may have received help, prompting a broader investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Correctional Services authorities have welcomed the re-arrest and indicated that further details will emerge as investigations progress.
