Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema says pensioners should receive a monthly grant of R4,500, arguing that many elderly people are the backbone of their families.
Malema was speaking at the launch of the EFF’s provincial manifesto in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga, where scores of supporters gathered.
He says there is enough money available to fund the proposed grant but alleges that public funds are being misappropriated.
“There’s no one here who can ever say grand-mom never looked after me. They are all the products of grandmothers. That’s why the money must go to them because they look after our children. We must support them and fight for them, because fighting for them is fighting for black families. They are the heads of black families.”
