The Gauteng Department of Education, working alongside law enforcement agencies, has intensified school safety operations across the province in an effort to reduce crime and misconduct among learners.

The raids uncovered several prohibited items, raising concerns about discipline, substance abuse and learner safety in schools.

Education MEC Lebogang Maile joined officials during inspections aimed at creating safer learning environments at Rivoni Secondary School in Daveyton. Officials reportedly recovered items including suspected disposable vapes and condoms during the operation.

Authorities said the raids form part of broader efforts to address challenges such as drug abuse, gang-related activities and the possession of dangerous weapons on school premises.

Speaking during the operation, education officials emphasized that schools should remain safe spaces dedicated to teaching and learning. They noted that the inspections are intended not only to identify prohibited items but also to protect learners and promote discipline.

The Gauteng Department of Education said similar operations will continue across the province as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen school safety and improve conditions for effective learning.
