Democratic Alliance (DA) leader, Geordin Hill-Lewis says residents of Ekurhuleni on Gauteng’s East Rand will be safer under a DA government.
Hill-Lewis was addressing residents in Tsakane, where the municipality has been rocked by the discovery of the bodies of nine women who were allegedly murdered over the past three months.
His engagement forms part of the DA’s Working for All Tour ahead of the November Local Government Elections.
The party has offered a R500 000 reward for information that could lead to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the murders.
Hill-Lewis also outlined measures the party says it would implement to improve public safety in Ekurhuleni. These include requiring every senior officer in the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) to undergo a lifestyle audit.
He says the DA would also focus on professionalising the EMPD, increasing visible policing in crime hotspots, improving street lighting and making public transport stations, parks and pedestrian routes safer.
The party also plans to make greater use of technology, including drones and cameras, to enhance crime prevention and policing.
