The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has announced new fuel price adjustments taking effect on Wednesday.

Petrol will decrease by 52 cents per litre, bringing some relief to motorists.

However diesel users will face an increase of between R1.23 and R1.38 per litre. Illuminating paraffin will also go up by 2.3 cents per litre, while the maximum retail price of LP Gas will decrease.

Department spokesperson Robert Maake said the drop in petrol is due to a decline in the average Brent crude oil price during the review period.

He added that diesel and illuminating paraffin prices increased because of supply shortages linked to the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and export restrictions by Russia. The rand also weakened slightly against the US dollar.

Maake noted that prices of propane and butane dropped, and the slate levy was reduced by 52.56 cents per litre from 113.94 to 61.38 cents per litre in both petrol and diesel price structures.
