Limpopo Authorities Warn of Heavy Traffic on the N1 as Holidaymakers Return Home

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has alerted motorists to expect heavy traffic on the N1 as the school holiday period coincides with month-end travel, resulting in increased vehicle volumes across the province.

According to the Department, significant congestion is anticipated on the southbound route from Limpopo to Gauteng on Sunday, 28 June 2026, as holidaymakers and other travellers make their way home. Traffic is also expected to remain busy on several major roads throughout the province.

To manage the anticipated influx of vehicles, traffic law enforcement officers and emergency response teams have been deployed on a 24-hour high-alert operation. Officials will be stationed along key routes, at weighbridges, and at toll plazas to improve road safety, respond swiftly to incidents, and assist in maintaining the flow of traffic.

The Department has appealed to motorists to remain patient and cooperative, particularly at toll gates where delays and long queues are expected. Drivers have also been warned against reckless behaviour such as speeding, queue-jumping, road rage, distracted driving, and driving under the influence, as these actions increase the risk of crashes and further traffic disruptions.

Road users are encouraged to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy by checking tyres, brakes, lights, and the validity of their licence discs before travelling. Travellers are also advised to get sufficient rest before setting off, take regular breaks during long journeys, and allow extra travel time to accommodate traffic congestion.

The Department reiterated that road safety is a shared responsibility and urged all motorists to play their part in protecting lives on South Africa’s roads.

“Arrive Alive” remains the Department’s message to all road users travelling during the busy holiday return period.
