Four women were killed in a tragic head-on collision between a sedan and a truck on the R23 road between Volksrust and Perdekop on Friday evening.
Four other people were injured, including the driver and three passengers in the sedan. Their injuries ranged from minor to serious. The truck driver sustained minor injuries.
Mandla Chauke said the four women who died were passengers in the sedan. All injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital in Standerton for treatment.
Chauke said the cause of the crash is still under investigation, but reckless and negligent driving has not been ruled out. Jackie Macie sent condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
She urged motorists to drive responsibly and obey road rules. Macie said the R23 remains a high-risk route due to the many fatal crashes recorded during past holiday seasons.
She added that the road becomes very busy during holidays and long weekends.
