A 35-year-old labour law attorney has been shot and killed outside the CCMA offices in Johannesburg.
The victim, Chinette Gallichan, was attacked on Monday morning while arriving for work.
According to reports, the incident happened at around 9:00 AM at the corner of Fox and Joubert streets in the Johannesburg CBD. Witnesses say a man approached her as she got out of her car and opened fire at close range.
The suspect then ran away and later escaped in a waiting vehicle.
Gallichan was working in the labour litigation department at Sibanye-Stillwater at the time of her death. It is believed that she was involved in a case representing a mining company in a dispute with retrenched workers.
Police say nothing was stolen from the scene, and early signs suggest that this may have been a planned or targeted attack.Gallichan was highly educated.
She obtained her law degree from the University of South Africa and later completed a postgraduate diploma in labour law with distinction from the University of Johannesburg.
Outside of her legal career, she was active in sports and enjoyed running. She was a member of the Run Zone Athletics Club and took part in major races, including the Cape Town Marathon in 2023.
Police are still investigating the case and have not yet made any arrests.
