The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) welcomes the arrest of 16 people linked to the Medicare 24 corruption case.
Among those arrested are senior police officials and a well-known underworld figure, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
The arrests are connected to a R360 million tender that was given to Medicare 24 in the Tshwane district. Authorities believe the tender was given in a corrupt way.
The suspects appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on 24 March 2026.
The case has been postponed to May. Matlala, who is the first accused, was denied bail while the other accused individuals were granted bail. The EFF said the arrests are an important step, but they are not enough.
The party warned that many corruption cases in the past have failed because of weak investigations, political interference, and delays in court. The party also said it is important that this case leads to real justice.
They want those responsible to be fully prosecuted and held accountable. This case is part of a larger investigation into corruption in the security sector.
Evidence of wrongdoing, including procurement irregularities and possible collusion, has already been presented at the Madlanga Commission.
The arrests show that authorities are taking action, but many people are eagerly waiting to see if indeed justice will be served.
