A Brakpan security industry member & former Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department official Van der Merwe has been gunned down after testifying as a witness before the Madlanga Commission.
The deceased was shot outside his home on Friday night in front of his family. They called him “Witness D” to hide his identity, but his killers found him, which sparked concern. The president has condemned this incident & stated that his thoughts were with the “deeply traumatised family” who witnessed the attack by this man.
This incident has raised several concerns about the safety of people who are willing to step forward to testify before the commission. The law is urged to ensure that they conduct internal investigations, bring justice, and encourage a safe environment for all witnesses.
