Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA) is shutting down its plants in Bloemfontein and East London, a move that could leave about 680 people without jobs. The company says it is struggling financially and needs to streamline operations to remain efficient.

CCBSA has promised separation packages and support for affected workers, and discussions are underway to help them transition.

However, the Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) has raised concerns, saying the company has not properly consulted with employees. The union is pushing for urgent talks to ensure workers’ rights are protected.

The closures are expected to have a wider impact beyond the company itself. Many residents rely on these jobs, and small businesses linked to the plants may also be affected. Community leaders are calling on the government to intervene and assist displaced workers in finding new opportunities.

Meanwhile, CCBSA insists the restructuring is necessary to stay competitive in the beverage market. For now, workers are being urged to make use of the support programs offered by the company, while unions and local authorities continue negotiations to limit the fallout.

The coming weeks will be crucial for both employees and the communities affected by these closures.
