The Hoxani Tribal Council in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, has celebrated Heritage Month with a cultural gathering aimed at promoting African traditions, values and customs.

Traditional leaders, residents and stakeholders gathered for the annual celebration, which also highlighted the importance of education and community development.

Hosi Fumani Curtis Nkuna called on the community to work together to improve the future of young people.

He said two schools around Hoxani are currently being renovated, describing the projects as a sign of the community’s commitment to education.

Nkuna also stressed the role of traditional leaders in guiding young people and ensuring that children understand their identity, responsibilities and cultural heritage.

The spirit of Ubuntu was also highlighted during the event, with Gift of the Givers donating food parcels to 150 grandmothers.

The organisation’s contribution was aimed at supporting and honouring elderly members of the community, who play an important role in preserving cultural knowledge and traditions.

Chairperson of the Mpumalanga House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders, Kgosi Lameck Mokoena, also urged husbands to draft wills to protect the interests of their spouses and children.

He said having a will can provide clarity on inheritance and help protect families after a person’s death.

The community says preserving heritage requires honouring the past while working together to build a better future for future generations.
