Health experts are warning the public to get their flu shots as soon as possible after the 2026 flu season started earlier than expected.

According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, the flu season officially began around March 9, which is earlier than usual.

This has raised concerns that the number of flu cases could increase quickly in the coming weeks.Experts say people should not delay getting vaccinated.

The flu season normally starts later, during the colder winter months and often after the Easter holidays.

However, this year’s early start means people may be at risk sooner than expected. Cheryl Cohen, head of the Centre for Respiratory Diseases at University of the Witwatersrand, explained that the unusual timing is worrying.

She said the flu season has already begun and could spread faster if people are not protected.

Health officials believe that getting vaccinated early will help reduce the number of severe cases and protect vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, and people with weak immune systems.

They also reminded the public to continue practicing good hygiene.

Washing hands regularly, covering coughs, and staying home when sick can help stop the spread of the virus. As winter approaches, experts expect flu infections to rise.

They are urging everyone who can get the vaccine to do so now to stay safe and help protect their communities.
