JOHANNESBURG – Former National Director of Public Prosecutions Bulelani Ngcuka has said there was no political interference in the prosecution of TRC cases when he was in charge.

Ngcuka was speaking about delays in prosecutions while he was in office between 1998 and 2004.

He also said the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) knew that apartheid police were behind Steve Biko’s death, but there was not enough evidence to take the case to court.Biko died in 1977.

The NPA has reopened an investigation into his death.

The Khampepe Commission has decided that cross-examining Ngcuka will happen at a later date.

Ngcuka’s lawyer, Rafik Bhana SC, said the Calata family and others did not have a good reason to cross-examine him.

The commission is still listening to Ngcuka’s main testimony.
