SMOKERS, DRINKERS & MOTORISTS TO PAY MORE AS TAX RISES

In the 2026 budget speech held on 25 February 2026, the Minister of finance, Enoch Godongwana said that some tax increases cannot be avoided.

For the 2026/2027 financial year, tax on tobacco, alcohol, and fuel will increase due to inflation.

Cigarettes and Tobacco.

-A pack of 20 cigarettes will move from R22.81 to R23.58.

-Pipe tobacco increases by 28 cents per 25 grams.

-Cigarette tobacco increases by 87 cents per 50 grams.

-Cigars increase by R4.56 per 23 grams.

-Electronic nicotine and non-nicotine products will also have a much higher tax.

Alcohol

-A 340ml can of beer or cider goes up by 8 cents.

-A 750ml bottle of wine goes up by 15 cents.

-A 750ml bottle of spirits goes up by R3.20.

Fuel

-Fuel levy increases by 9 cents per litre for petrol and 8 cents per litre for diesel.

-The carbon fuel levy increases by 5 cents per litre for petrol and 6 cents per litre for diesel.
