Is President Cyril Ramaphosa Stepping Down? South Africa Reacts to Growing Speculation

Mafemo Madimetja

South Africa woke up to intense political noise this week as rumours spread across social media claiming that President Cyril Ramaphosa might resign after the upcoming G20 Summit.

The country immediately went into debate mode, with citizens questioning whether there is truth behind the whispers or whether it is just another politically driven storm.

The conversation started when reports circulated suggesting that Ramaphosa was preparing to step down quietly after hosting world leaders. Social media platforms, especially X (Twitter) and Facebook, quickly turned the rumour into a trending topic, with people sharing their fears, frustrations, and hopes for South Africa’s leadership.

Some said they would not be surprised if he resigned because of internal pressure within the ANC. Others argued that the country is too unstable right now for another political shake-up.

However, Ramaphosa’s inner circle is not entertaining any of it. His advisor, Dr Bejani Chauke, shut the rumours down completely, calling them “false and disturbing.” According to Dr Chauke, the President has no intention of stepping down and remains fully committed to finishing his term.

Ramaphosa’s Bold Statement: “If They Want Me Gone, I will go”Adding fuel to the public debate, Ramaphosa himself made a surprising comment during an ANC NEC meeting. He said he would resign immediately if the NEC formally asked him to.

To many people, that statement sounded like a challenge, a sign that he is tired of political games and wants clarity from his own party. To others, it was a sign of pressure building behind the scenes.

For ordinary citizens, these rumours do not feel small. South Africa is dealing with slow service delivery, unemployment, crime, and economic instability. The thought of another leadership shake-up leaves many wondering what will happen next and how it could affect the Government of National Unity.

For now, Ramaphosa is still leading the country. But the rumours have shown one thing clearly, South Africans are craving stability, and any sign of uncertainty sends shockwaves through the nation.

Whether the talk ends here or grows into something bigger will depend on the ANC and what happens at the G20 Summit may set the tone for Ramaphosa’s next move.
