Businessman Mandla Mthembu, the former husband of media personality Khanyi Mbau, passed away after battling health complications linked to multiple strokes.

The Mthembu family confirmed his death and requested privacy during this deeply painful time as they mourn the loss of a father, brother, and friend.Mthembu rose to public attention in 2006 when he entered a customary marriage with Mbau, who was then an actress and presenter at the age of 19.

The couple shared a daughter, Khanukani “Khanz” Mbau. Their high-profile romance made headlines, particularly for their lavish lifestyle, including matching yellow Lamborghinis, which cemented their reputation as South Africa’s “it couple.”However, their relationship was not without controversy.

Mbau was labelled as a gold digger at the time, and their marriage was marred by allegations of abuse. The couple eventually divorced in 2009 after three years together. Following their split, Mthembu retreated from the spotlight, while Mbau continued to grow her career in entertainment. Despite this, Mthembu remained remembered for his flamboyant lifestyle and generosity, with reports suggesting he had lavished Mbau and her family with expensive gifts during their relationship.

Family spokesperson Mohlala revealed that Mthembu had suffered two strokes. “He had two strokes and was already in hospital when he suffered the second one, so he succumbed to the weakness from the stroke itself,” she explained.Mohlala added that the family was not yet in a position to share further details, but remembered Mthembu as “someone who was there for the entire family.”Mthembu leaves behind six children.

Details regarding his memorial service and funeral will be announced in due course.
