Two foreign nationals have been arrested for allegedly engaging in illegal mining during a police operation in Atok, in Limpopo’s Sekhukhune District.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) says members of its Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit conducted the operation at a farm in Atok at about 8am on Wednesday.
A 27-year-old Malawian man and a 41-year-old Zimbabwean woman were arrested during the operation.
Police confiscated equipment allegedly linked to illegal mining, including three generators, three jackhammers, five buckets, a shovel and approximately 14 metres of electric cable.
According to SAPS, the two suspects were also found to be in South Africa illegally. They are facing charges of illegal mining and contravention of the Immigration Act.
The suspects remain in police custody and are expected to appear before the Sekhukhune Magistrates’ Court.
