The Premier Soccer League (PSL) will see a moment of silence at all Betway Premiership and Motsepe Foundation Championship fixtures this weekend, in honour of victims of femicide and recent violent killings.
The league announced that the initiative is intended to join the nation in mourning those who have lost their lives to violence and to extend condolences to their families and loved ones.
In its statement, the PSL said it was deeply saddened by the violent crimes reported in recent times, including cases that may have gone unreported.
The league also expressed hope that justice will be served for the victims and their families. The moment of silence will take place before matches across both the Betway Premiership and Motsepe Foundation Championship from tonight and throughout the weekend.
The initiative comes as South Africa continues to confront concerns surrounding gender-based violence, femicide, and violent crime.
By using football fixtures as a platform for remembrance, the PSL is giving supporters, players, coaches, and officials an opportunity to collectively honour those who have lost their lives.
The league concluded its statement by offering condolences to the families affected and calling for the victims to be remembered with dignity.
The weekend’s matches will therefore carry a moment of reflection beyond the football itself.
