The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is working on new funding guidelines that will be introduced in 2027.

Higher Education Minister, Buti Manamela said the guidelines are aimed at improving the current funding system for university students.

The Department of Higher Education and NSFAS recently briefed Parliament on their preparations for the 2027 academic year.

According to the minister, the new guidelines will focus on improving student support, funding management and the overall funding model.

He said the department hopes to finalise the guidelines by 2027 and present them to the Cabinet for approval.

The Chairperson of Higher Education Portfolio Committee, Tebogo Letsie, said that discussions with the minister on a sustainable funding model are ongoing. He added that Parliament will be updated once the model has been completed.

The proposed changes are expected to help create a more stable and sustainable funding system for higher education institutions and students.
