South African defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi made an immediate impact on his return to the Chicago Fire starting XI, helping the MLS side secure a 1–0 victory over Charlotte FC on Saturday.
The 21-year-old returned to action for the first time since the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after being side-lined with a thigh injury suffered in July. His absence had been felt by the Fire, who entered the match on a seven-game winless run.
Mbokazi started at left centre-back and brought stability to a Chicago defence that had struggled during the team’s difficult run. His return came at an important stage of the season as the Fire looked to regain momentum.
The victory ended Chicago’s longest winless streak of the season and gave the team a much-needed three points. Mbokazi’s return also provides Gregg Berhalter with another defensive possibility as the Fire approach the final stages of the MLS campaign.
For South African football supporters, his comeback is another positive development, particularly after the defender played a vital role for Bafana Bafana before the World Cup.
After a lengthy spell on the side-lines, Mbokazi’s first appearance back has certainly drawn attention.
