Five suspects, aged between 25 and 35, have been arrested in connection with the Marikana mass shooting in Philippi East, Cape Flats, where four people were killed and one person injured.

The incident occurred on Saturday, 7 March 2026, around 9:30 pm, when armed individuals stormed a yard in Disa Road and opened fire, resulting in the deaths of three men and one woman, while another victim survived with injuries.

The police believe the motive behind the attack is linked to extortion rackets operating in the area, a problem that has plagued communities across the Cape Flats for years.

The arrests were carried out early on Monday, 9 March 2026, by the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit, supported by the Combat Team, following an overnight tracing operation.

During the arrests, two firearms were confiscated.

The suspects now face charges of murder, attempted murder, and illegal possession of firearms, and are expected to appear in court soon.

Authorities have described the arrests as a significant breakthrough in tackling violent crime in Philippi East, although they acknowledge that extortion and gang-related violence remain deeply entrenched in the region.

The community has been left shaken by the attack, highlighting the ongoing vulnerability of residents to organized crime networks.

The police have vowed to intensify operations aimed at dismantling these networks, while community leaders continue to call for stronger cooperation between law enforcement and residents to restore safety and stability.

The arrests bring a measure of relief to the community but also underscore the scale of the challenge in addressing violent crime in Cape Flats, where extortion and gang activity continue to fuel fear and instability.
