Mexican forces have killed one of the world’s most wanted drug trafficker, known as El Mencho, after tracking a romantic partner to his hideout near a mountain town in Jalisco.
The 59-year-old, whose real name was Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, led the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). He was wounded during a shootout with the military and died while being transported for medical treatment.
The operation, reportedly supported by the United States of America intelligence, triggered widespread violence across western Mexico.
Cartel members blocked roads, burned vehicles and attacked security forces, particularly in Jalisco and Michoacán.
Dozens of people were killed and injured, and many were arrested as authorities worked to restore order.
El Mencho had long been a top target for both Mexican and United States of America officials, with Washington offering a $15 million reward for his capture.
His death may ease international pressure on Mexico’s government, but experts warn it could spark internal conflict within the cartel and lead to further violence if rival factions fight for control.
