Former Gauteng Health MEC Brian Hlongwa, accused of corruption, has died.

The ANC Gauteng has announced the passing of former Gauteng Health MEC Brian Hlongwa who died after suffering from an illness.

According to ANC Gauteng Brian Hlongwa, was a committed cadre of the liberation movement. Brian Hlongwa began his activism in 1979/1980 through COSAS, later serving in SOYCO, STYCO, SAYCO and the ANC Youth League, as part of the “Young Lions” generation.

He was then later recruited into the underground structures of the ANC and MK and later formed part of the security detail for President Nelson Mandela after his release.

He served the movement in various leadership roles, including ANCYL PWV Regional Chairperson, ANC Councillor, MMC in the City of Johannesburg, MEC for Health (2006-2009), and ANC Chief Whip in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (2009-2019). He also contributed to political education through the ANC Gauteng PEC and the O.R. Tambo School of Leadership.
