SAPS CFO Puleng Dimpane appeared before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee yesterday at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre, and things got serious.

She revealed that the controversial unit known as the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) has cost taxpayers R435 million since 2018.

Dimpane also flagged the contract awarded to the security-services firm Medicare24 Tshwane District, linked to alleged crime-figure Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala calling it “an embarrassment” and confirming that improper procurement processes triggered an internal audit.

Payments under that tender have been frozen.

On procurement irregularities and corruption, Dimpane didn’t mince words. She told MPs that “consequence management is not real” inside SAPS, suggesting past investigations into irregular spending ended with light reprimands instead of real accountability.

With the hearing underway this week, and Matlala expected to testify soon, many are watching closely: the evidence Dimpane laid bare today could shake the foundations of how tenders and policing work in South Africa, and could reshape public trust in law enforcement.
