The South African Weather Services (SAWS) has issued a warning on the level 5 thunderstorm for some parts of South Africa.

This level five might lead to very bad thunderstorms affecting the central interior of the country over the weekend. The thunderstorm will affect Gauteng, Mpumalanga KwaZulu-Natal, and part of the eastern and western cape.

According to forecaster André Fourie, severe thunderstorms warning are in place:

Orange level 5: Central interior

Yellow level 2: Eastern Northern Cape, Gauteng, Southern Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal Coast

Yellow level 4: Western interior of KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal’s Department of Cooperative Governance has put disaster management teams on high alert in response to the severe weather warning.

A cut-off low-pressure system is set to bring heavy rain, severe thunderstorms, and strong winds to the eastern parts of the country from Saturday to Monday.

That is a sobering reminder of the impact of these weather systems. The same type of system caused devastating floods in April 2022, claiming over 400 lives.

The Department is urging motorists to exercise caution, especially now that we are expecting heavy rain and strong winds.
