The University of Limpopo SRC elections for the 2025/26 academic year are officially underway, with multiple student parties mobilizing their members to secure votes. Contestants include the Economic Freedom Fighters Youth Command (EFFYC), SASCO, the Student Christian Organization (SCO), and the Umkhonto We Sizwe Student Movement (MKMS).
Many students anticipate that the EFFYC will continue its dominance by winning a fourth consecutive term, while others believe it is time to allow new leadership to emerge. The newly elected SASCO presidential candidate, Sgumza, confidently asserts that the 2025/26 year belongs to SASCO, a sentiment shared by many students, as evidenced by strong support at the SASCO manifesto event held on September 7, 2025, at Moshobane Square.
The SCO has also made a significant move by bringing back former SRC president “Viper,” who was widely regarded as one of the institution’s best leaders during his tenure in 2023. SCO is hopeful that students will choose effective leadership for the upcoming year.
Regarding the EFFYC, the presidential candidate has not yet been officially announced, though many expect it to be former Humanities chairperson Melvin Mogano. EFFYC remains a favored choice among students, having secured three consecutive terms so far.
The MKMS is less known among students, having not campaigned in last year’s SRC elections. This year, however, it has stepped into the spotlight to establish its presence on campus.
Ultimately, the decision of who will lead rests with the students of the University of Limpopo for the coming academic year. The election promises to be a competitive race reflecting diverse student voices and aspirations
