South African rapper Leslie Jonathan Mampe Jr., widely known as Da L.E.S, has opened up about his ongoing recovery after suffering a life-threatening stroke on his 39th birthday in July 2024. The stroke left him unconscious for a month, forcing his family to move him between hospitals in Johannesburg before eventually relocating him to the United States for specialized care. Reflecting on the ordeal, Da L.E.S admitted that many people thought he would not survive, describing himself as “grateful to be alive.”
Nearly a year later, Da L.E.S is making steady progress, although the road to full recovery remains challenging. He has regained the ability to walk short distances and continues to work on improving his speech and mobility—particularly on his left side, which was most affected. Through therapy and rehabilitation, he has shown resilience despite the physical and emotional setbacks, often sharing updates that highlight both his struggles and victories.
Beyond his personal journey, Da L.E.S has used his experience to raise awareness about strokes and the importance of early treatment and rehabilitation. His openness has inspired fans and fellow musicians, showing that even in the face of life-changing challenges, perseverance and support can lead to hope and healing. He has also expressed eagerness to return to music, proving that while recovery takes time, his passion for his craft remains unshaken.
