Head of the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Limpopo, Professor Witness Maluleke, highlights the influence of Criminal Cartels in creating lawlessness due to their connections with politicians and law enforcement.
SAPS Crime Intelligence head, Dumisani Khumalo testified at the Madlanga Commission and revealed that a drug Cartel is allegedly connected to the suspended police ministerz Senzo Mchunu, top politicians and other business figures.
Khumalo claims that Cartels strategically targets the justice system to gain allies in law enforcement, politics and judiciary alliances. This assists them in suppressing evidence, blocking prosecution and staying in operation longer.
According to Maluleke, South Africa should get back to basics, and sort out the criminal justice system by tightening up institutions to tackle crime.
He says the country is facing significant challenges in solving crimes such as drug trafficking, and vehicle snuggling due to vast networks and connections involved.
