Thabo Mbeki, the former president, urges KwaZulu-Natal politicians to take immediate action in response to a World Bank assessment that named the port of Durban “the world’s worst-performing centre”.

From ranking 399th in the 2023 assessment, to the worst of 405 ports in 2024 the port fell a number of spots.Cape Town came in at number 400 on the World Bank’s 2024 container port ranking, which was announced last week.

Over the weekend, Mbeki spoke to the members of African National Congress (ANC), at the party’s political school in Durban. He informed the delegates that in order to stop further deterioration in governance, the party must reconstruct its internal institutions. “That highlights how crucially important the calibre of leadership in this room is.

That report needs to be changed by the leadership in this room so that the World Bank declares Durban to be among the world’s top-performing seaports, but that is up to us.

According to Mbeki, the leadership of KZN has a duty to the nation to organise its affairs.”What you accomplish matters not only for the province but also for the nation’s future. Thus, it turns into a typical problem.”
